It's not exactly summer weather around here but that didn't stop us from making snow cones. John's folks gave us some moolah for Christmas and we spent it on a Ninja. For those of you who aren't really into kitchen gadgets, it does everything but clean your kitchen after supper. We tried out the ice crushing feature last night - thumbs up!

Catching up
How do you like my new look? My friend Alyssa jazzed up my blog a tid bit. I think she did an excellent job capturing the personalities of my children...and I got longer hair! Poor John stayed the same. I thought about telling Alyssa to put a chainsaw in his hand but that might look a little creepy.
It's never a good thing when your son comes running into the house saying, "It wasn't my fault!" and then you hear the screaming. Apparently, the aforementioned son was pushing his little sister in the wagon and got a little too wild. The wagon stopped at the curb but the little sister didn't. Face plant into the cement. Why do these things always happen when John is out of town? She was fine. I didn't faint.
As many of you know, I am helping my friend Becky organize her basement. It is a lot of fun...at least for me. Becky is a keeper. I am a thrower. Sometimes we come across some real treasures. Take this Hot Dog Hero. Yes people, it cooks your hot dogs. And the best part is that it barks when your dogs are ready. I am not kidding. This gem will soon be up for auction on E-bay...much to the disappointment of my children.
Holly is on the leadership board of a really cool organization called Boyfriend Bears. You can check it out here boyfriendbears.org. The girls sponsored a snack booth at LC's family fun night.
Aren't they cute?
I love the look on concentration on her face...or maybe she's just getting really sick of cotton candy.
I should have taken a "before" picture. Aren't they beautiful?
Here's a shot of all the stuff put back in. Now we'll see how long I can keep it so neat and organized???
I just got done reading a book about the Amish. I came to the conclusion that my children are too spoiled and need more chores. These two have been given the job to completely clean up after supper. This includes clearing the table (this is the only thing they had to do before), loading the dishwasher, washing and drying the things that need to be hand washed, wiping off the table and counters, and sweeping the floors. I am loving this new arrangement. They are not.
This handsome guy has been doing ALOT of studying lately. He needs to take his board review test in one week. If you think of it, say a little prayer for him.
Now, consider yourselves all caught up on the lives of the Hiemstra family.
Have a blessed weekend!

More stuff
Holly got her permit. AAAHHHH! She's been driving with her dad a couple of times. I went with her once. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. It was much worse. She's a great driver...I'm not a good passenger. All those child-rearing books are full of great information but none of them tell you that your tiny little baby is going to grow up to drive cars. It's scary folks. Very, very scary.
My friend the farmer has a nice little feature on her blog called "Soup for Supper Tonight". She makes different soups and then gives us the recipes. I was telling her the other day how much I enjoyed it. She promptly asked me if I had ever made any of her soups. I had to say no. Until now. Lea, I made your root soup. Lea, I am sticking to Campbells. No, just kidding. It was good.
That Sam I am. That child always keeps me guessing. Sam has never been a big reader. As in, I have to force him to read. This has always been a little disturbing to me since all those child-rearing books that give you absolutely no information on how to handle your baby driving tell you that reading is very, very important to academic growth. I am happy to report that my Sam is now a reader. Apparently, it took his dad taking him to the public library to pick out books to do it. John let him pick out books from the teen section and Sam has found his passion...
He loves these books and even though they are not something I would have chosen for him, I am going with it. I actually had to tell him to put the book away the other night at the supper table. I didn't think I would ever say those words to my son.
And then there is my Katie Kat. She spotted this dress at Costco the other day and just had to have it. She wore it to Little Lambs on Wednesday and then I had to wash it so she could wear it to preschool on Friday. It has lots of sparkles on it and it is a very good twirling dress.
I realize it doesn't really go with black tights and boots but they were the only clean tights. Wouldn't she just make the sweetest ballerina? Tell John. He doesn't see a need for ballet lessons.

Leftovers
It's been a while folks. Life just keeps flying by here at the Hiemstra House. I just read something on the kid's school website that said we had to start registering for next year. What? Didn't I just register for school? Seriously, every year just seems to go by faster. What I want to know is does the school year fly by for teachers too or do they start counting the days until summer vacation in October? I only ask because I'm thinking time would slow down if I were a teacher. I'm not sure how they do it. I help out in Sam's room for an hour and I leave with a killer headache. I would appreciate all the teachers that read this blog (I know there are at least two of you) to tell me if the school year flies by for you too.
Enough of that...here's some leftover pictures for your viewing enjoyment. These are from Holly's birthday supper. She picked Italian (she always picks Italian).
I still can't believe I have a fifteen-year-old??!
