Happy anniversary to me!
Can you believe it...I've been blogging exactly a year now?! My very first blog entry was last September and it was all about a chair cushion. I remember when I told my mom I had started a blog and she said, "Why? What are you going to write about?" Ha...I showed her. I can write about all life's important things...chair cushions, big hair, poop, chocolate, over-sized playhouses, and most important...my incredible, wonderful, beautiful (and oftentimes humorous) family. They are my joy and my inspiration and can't wait to blog about all them for another year. Oh and by the way, leave me a comment once in a while...I LOVE reading them and it's such an encouragement to know that people are reading this thing.
Katie had her first hagel sandwich this week. Sam couldn't quit laughing...he kept saying, "She's got hagel boogers!"
I get together with these ladies once a month for coffee, fellowship, and LOTS of laughing. I look forward to "Thursday coffee day" all month and I LOVE these gals.
My Katie Kat.
She's growing up so fast.
It's getting tough to get a good picture.
Yeah...really tough.
Yes, she is spoiled. Could you resist this face?
Today was jog-a-thon day at the kid's school. Katie and I went to cheer on Sammy. Here he is on the first lap. I hate to brag but look at my boy go! See him? See the huge pack of other kids behind him? That boy can run!
He smiled the entire time.
Look at that form! I'm pretty sure he gets his athletic prowess from me.

Monday already?
You can't be serious...it's really Monday already? Next week this time, I will be in VEGAS! I have a lot to do before then so this is a short one folks.
The Hiemstra family weekend recap is as follows:
Friday night: We watched our first LCS football game. They lost. They lost real bad. We discovered Katie is only a Lyncs fan until halftime (do they call it halftime in football?)...a girl can only take so much. Despite the loss and the squirmy baby, we still had a fun time. We'll be back...maybe without the squirmy baby this time.
Saturday: Holly and I brave Bellingham to do shopping. Not fun shopping. Costco was busy but they were handing out samples of Milano cookies so it was worth it. Does anybody else out there get just a little depressed after shopping at Costco? I was loading up my car and I could think of was, "I just spent $200 and all this stuff will be gone in a month." Saturday night we had a fire and roasted hot dogs and smores. I know I've said it before but why do hot dogs taste so good roasted over the fire and so yucky otherwise?
Sunday: Church. Finished a good book about an arson investigator who is also a pyromaniac. Church again.
Gotta go - there are lists to be made, laundry to be done...and Katie needs her nose wiped.
Have a happy week!

A little of this and a little of that
On Wednesday, I started Coffee Break. I think it's going to be a good year. We are studying this...
Not only do I LOVE Esther, I also think it's tough being a woman. I'm not saying that I don't like being a woman, I'm not saying that there aren't some real advantages...I'm just saying it's tough being a woman. Some days when the counter is full of dirty dishes and potato peels, when there is another huge stack of paperwork to go through, when I am tripping over matchbox cars and my socks literally stick to the kitchen floor, I think, "I want a different job". Some days when John innocently asks, "What did you do today?" I want to scream back, "WHAT DIDN'T I DO TODAY?!" Okay. Wow. Not sure where that come from. Anyhoo, we are studying Esther and I am very excited.Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Dee's favorite commandment and other weekend stuff
Is it wrong to have a favorite commandment? Because I do. It's number 4. I love it so much I have it memorized right out of the Heidelberg Catechism..."six days thou shalt labor, and do all thy work; but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God, in it thou shalt not do any work". This is where I spent a good majority of yesterday...
On Saturday we all worked in the yard. I mowed the grass even though it really didn't need to be mowed just because I love to. In the afternoon we went to John's company picnic. I am not a huge salmon lover but one of the nurses husbands grills the most awesomest salmon. I ate a very large piece. There was also chocolate/caramel pie from the Lynden Dutch Bakery. I ate a very large piece. There were games for the kids...
Here's Sam playing tug-a-war. He's in the orange shirt. The first game he actually was tugging the wrong way. Oops.
Yes, those are M&Ms in the hammock and yes, I have still have a big pile o' dirt underneath my hammock.
While we are on the subject...just so you know, commandment number 5 is my second favorite (honor thy father and mother) and number 10 is my least favorite (thou shalt not covet). I have a hard time with that one.
Moving on..my youngest daughter found a sucker on Friday. The girl can't walk but she did manage to pull herself up onto a shelf in my pantry and find a Dum Dum in Sam's treat bucket. When I found her, she had sucked most of the paper off and was just getting to the good stuff. How could I take it away? So I didn't. I did put her in the high chair and stuck a bib on her though.

5 things I said to Sam yesterday
1. If I have to wake you up one more time, you are getting a spanking for breakfast.
2. We've had this discussion before. Fruit snacks are not fruit.
3. Were your socks inside out all day?
4. In the future, please do not put worms in my good Tuppwear containers.
5. Yes, baby snails are very cute.

Just in case...
Just in case you're wondering what's been happening at the Hiemstras...
Its been a little windy.
It was a close call folks but Sam's sunflower is still standing.
He got this at the end of preschool last spring. His first one died...let's just say that it was a little too loved (in other words, Sam watered it to death). Teacher Leslie gave him a new one and this one he's been obsessively taking care of all summer. Sam is very secure in his masculinity. He's pretty proud of his flower and he's not afraid to wear beads.
Our dear friends, Mike and Annie came to visit this weekend. We met them when we lived in Birch Bay. When we moved to Lynden, they moved to Illinois. They recently moved back to Washington and although they are too far away to walk across the street to share a pizza, watch a movie, or place ugly things from the thrift store in their yard....we are still mighty glad to have them back.
They have a beautiful baby girl, Elly who is two months older than our Katie. Elly and Katie pretty much ignored each other all weekend but I'm sure they will be great friends at Dordt.
Elly and Sam, on the other hand, got along great. Lucky for Becca, Sam is five years older than Elly which means they will not be at Dordt together.
We went over to the TerBeek farm on Sunday for hot dogs, s'mores...
and chicken holding.
Here's a cute baby sitting on the picnic table.
It was a fun, fun weekend. We missed you Mike and Annie! We'll be down to visit soon your new place soon...tell that massage therapist to start packing!

It was back to school today. Violin lessons started back up for Holly and for Sam...
SOCCER! Sam was especially excited about the bright green shirts.
This is what my girls were doing while Sam played soccer. Katie looks like she's interested but she's actually watching the dogs in the off-leash park, Holly doesn't even pretend to be interested.
Finally....a VERY happy birthday to my Aunt Jan. Sure wish we could have been there tonight to help you celebrate (and to eat Sweet Swine pizza)! We love you!
